Further adding to the confusion, I Company’s Jefferson has three entries in the Civil War Veterans Card File at the Pennsylvania State Archives – one as “Kunkle, Jefferson” for his service with the 176th Pennsylvania, one for his service with the 47th Pennsylvania’s I Company as an index card redirect (“Kunkle, Jefferson see Runkel, Jefferson”), and one for his entry for his I Company service as “Runkel, Jefferson.” Conversely, there appears to be no entry in the Civil War Veterans Card File for any “Runkle, Jefferson” aas having served with the 47th Pennsylvania’s G Company, but, there is an entry for a “Runkle, Jefferson” from G Company in the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Index Card File, which is apparently what the data on his gravestone at Mickleys (Saint John’s UCC Cemetery in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania was based on). There also appears to be no entry for a “Runkel, Jefferson” in the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Index Card File.

The soldier for this Company I roster, identified by Samuel P. Bates in his History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5 as “Francis Xander,” was actually Francis Xander, a Wagoner who was eventually promoted to the rank of Teamster. He served with Company I, returned to his home state of Pennsylvania, and was interred, when he died in 1904, at the Fairview Cemetery in West Catasauqua, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.
The second soldier shown on Bates’ rosters as “Francis Xander” was listed on Bates’ roster for Company B. Reported by Bates to have been killed on 8 April during the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads/Mansfield, Louisiana, his surname was spelled as “Sanders.” The status of Company B’s Francis Sanders/Xander was further confirmed in the obituary of his widow, Henrietta Susan (Balliet) Sanders, in the 15 May 1916 edition of Allentown’s Morning Call newspaper, which reported that Francis Sanders “enlisted in the Forty-seventh regiment and saw service for two enlistments until the battle of Sabine Cross Roads, La., where he was wounded and carried to the rear by his brother. From that day to this not a word was heard from him and the supposition was that he died from his wounds….” The obituary goes on to say that Francis Sanders of Company B most likely rests in an unknown, unmarked grave. Francis Sanders’ widow, Henrietta, was the sister of Allen G. Balliet, a 2nd Lieutenant under whom Francis served in Company B
