Noddins, James (see “Company G”)
* Records Confusion: Although in his History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5, historian Samuel P. Bates listed this soldier as having mustered in with Company G of the 47th Pennsylvania (but with an absent at muster out notation lacking a service end date), he also listed this soldier as having mustered in with Company A of the 47th Pennsylvania. Upon filing her widow’s pension claim, Noddins’ wife indicated that her husband had served with Company I; however, the U.S. Adjutant General’s Office, in a letter dated 24 July 1866, confirmed that Noddins served with G Company.

Lawall, both Lawall and Private William Radeline fell ill with fever sometime around 10 October 1865 while serving on detached duty at Ball’s/Bull’s Plantation roughly six miles from Charleston, South Carolina. Lawall attributed their illness to “the area where we did said detached duty being a marshy & swampy place – and being entirely surrounded by swamps.” Lawall recovered, but William Radeline was confined to the U.S. Army’s Roper Hospital at Charleston, South Carolina, and died at Roper Hospital from congestive intermittent fever 25 October 1865

Rank: Private
* Note: Several Company I soldiers who were classified as deserters in Bates’ History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5 (mustered in 30 August 1861, allegedly deserted 2 September) were later found to be wrongly classified as deserters, having been mustered in with other companies within the 47th Pennsylvania and their given and/or surnames having been duplicated and then misspelled on I Company muster rolls and/or by Bates or Pennsylvania State Archives personnel during their transfers of the data from these rolls to their respective record keeping systems. Additional research needs to be done on this soldier

Honors/Service Distinctions: Jointed from recruiting depot at Halltown, Virginia 9 August 1864. Promoted from the rank of Private to Corporal 11 July 1865
* Note: This soldier appears to be different soldier than the “Kunkle, Jefferson” listed on the “Company G” roster; however, both men had the same dates of service with the 47th Pennsylvania and this Jefferson serving with the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers’ Company I has a pension record which indicates that he also served as “Kunkle, Jefferson” with the 176th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Further adding to the confusion, I Company’s Jefferson has three entries in the Civil War Veterans Card File at the Pennsylvania State Archives – one as “Kunkle, Jefferson” for his service with the 176th Pennsylvania, one for his service with the 47th Pennsylvania’s I Company as an index card redirect (“Kunkle, Jefferson see Runkel, Jefferson”), and one for his entry for his I Company service as “Runkel, Jefferson.” Conversely, there appears to be no entry in the Civil War Veterans Card File for any “Runkle, Jefferson” aas having served with the 47th Pennsylvania’s G Company, but, there is an entry for a “Runkle, Jefferson” from G Company in the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Index Card File, which is apparently what the data on his gravestone at Mickleys (Saint John’s UCC Cemetery in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania was based on). There also appears to be no entry for a “Runkel, Jefferson” in the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Index Card File.

Peter Stockslager did muster in with Company I on 30 August 1861, but was discharged four days later, enabling him to enlist with Company H on 19 September 1861; he served honorably until being wounded in action during the Battle of Pocotaligo, South Carolina on 22 October 1862; he was then discharged on a Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability

* Note: There were two soldiers named “Francis Xander” reported to have served with the 47th Pennsylvania, according to Bates’ History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5. The soldier for this Company I roster, identified by Samuel P. Bates in his History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5 as “Francis Xander,” was actually Francis Xander, a Wagoner who was eventually promoted to the rank of Teamster. He served with Company I, returned to his home state of Pennsylvania, and was interred, when he died in 1904, at the Fairview Cemetery in West Catasauqua, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

The second soldier shown on Bates’ rosters as “Francis Xander” was listed on Bates’ roster for Company B. Reported by Bates to have been killed on 8 April during the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads/Mansfield, Louisiana, his surname was spelled as “Sanders.” The status of Company B’s Francis Sanders/Xander was further confirmed in the obituary of his widow, Henrietta Susan (Balliet) Sanders, in the 15 May 1916 edition of Allentown’s Morning Call newspaper, which reported that Francis Sanders “enlisted in the Forty-seventh regiment and saw service for two enlistments until the battle of Sabine Cross Roads, La., where he was wounded and carried to the rear by his brother. From that day to this not a word was heard from him and the supposition was that he died from his wounds….” The obituary goes on to say that Francis Sanders of Company B most likely rests in an unknown, unmarked grave. Francis Sanders’ widow, Henrietta, was the sister of Allen G. Balliet, a 2nd Lieutenant under whom Francis served in Company B
