* Note: This soldier appears to be different soldier than the “Kunkle/Runkel, Jefferson” listed on the “Company I” roster; however, both men had the same dates of service with the 47th Pennsylvania. The Jefferson serving with the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers’ Company I has a pension record which indicates that he also served as “Kunkle, Jefferson” with the 176th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Further adding to the confusion, I Company’s Jefferson has three entries in the Civil War Veterans Card File at the Pennsylvania State Archives – one as “Kunkle, Jefferson” for his service with the 17th Pennsylvania, one for his service with the 47th Pennsylvania’s I Company as an index card redirect (“Kunkle, Jefferson see Runkel, Jefferson”), and one for his entry for his I Company service as “Runkel, Jefferson”; however, there appears to be no entry in the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Index Card File for a “Kunkle, Jefferson” or “Runkel, Jefferson” having service with the 47th’s I Company. Conversely, there appears to be no Civil War Veterans Card File for any “Runkle, Jefferson” as having served with the 47th Pennsylvania’s G Company, but, there is an entry for a “Runkle, Jefferson” from G Company in the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Burial Index Card File, which is apparently what the data on the gravestone for this G Company soldier at Mickleys (Saint John’s UCC Cemetery in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania) was based on).

Term of Service: 2 February 1865 – 19 July 1865 (mustered in for one-year term; fell ill near Summit Point, Virginia in April 1865; discharged for physical disability)

Possible Prior Service: According to an 1878 ledger entry documenting the admission of Benjamin S. Koons to the U.S. Home for Disabled Volunteers at Dayton, Ohio, this soldier mustered in as a Private with Company F of the 196th Pennsylvania Volunteers* on 15 July 1864, and served with that regiment until it was honorably disbanded at Philadelphia on 17 November 1864; however, while a listing for a “Benjamin F. Kuntz” was made on muster rolls for the 196th Pennsylvania, the surname spelling and middle initial for that soldier differ from that of the soldier shown on 47th Pennsylvania muster rolls, and no mention is made of service with the 196th Pennsylvania on Koons’ Civil War pension index listing.

* Records Confusion: Although in his History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-5, historian Samuel P. Bates listed this soldier as having mustered in with Company G of the 47th Pennsylvania (but with an absent at muster out notation lacking a service end date), Batess also listed this soldier as having mustered in with Company A of the 47th Pennsylvania. Upon filing her widow’s pension claim, Noddins’ wife indicated that her husband had served with Company I; however, the U.S. Adjutant General’s Office, in a letter dated 24 July 1866, confirmed that Noddins served with G Company: “‘Assigned as Recruit  Sept 18 1864. Never Joined Co. [meaning Company I]. Dis List furnished at date of assignment shows that rec’d clothing at date of Enlistment, to amt $17.00. Official notice rec’d to stop for transp. $13.53.
