Forced to sleep in his regular tent since no hospital was near their march route, his cold worsened. Upon arrival at Camp Griffin, Virginia, Private Brobst was taken to the 47th Pennsylvania’s regimental physician, Elisa Baily, M.D., who determined that Brobst’s lungs had been affected, and also diagnosed Brobst with a case of diarrhea. Dr. Baily determined that Private Brobst’s case was fatal, and discharged him on a Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability effective 18 January 1862. Upon his arrival in late January 1862 at his home in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Private Brobst was diagnosed by his longtime family physician as having an advanced case of consumption; Brobst died at his home in Allentown from consumption on 26 February 1862

Honors/Service Distinctions: During early October 1861, while the regiment was marching from Fort Ethan Allen to Camp Griffin in Virginia, Private Wetzel climbed up on a horse that was pulling G Company’s wagon. As the wagon arrived at a deep ditch, the horses lost their footing; he was thrown from and then pinned under the wagon as it overturned and plunged into the ditch. Although alive when pulled from the wreckage, Private Wetzel had sustained a fractured tibia. Initially cared for by regimental physicians for three days at Camp Griffin, he was transported to the Union’s general hospital at the Union Hotel in Georgetown, District of Columbia. His leg was amputated, but inflammation set in, and he succumbed 17 November 1861 to complications from the amputation. He was interred at Military Asylum Cemetery (now known as the U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery)
