Honors: As Corporal, commanded one of the small Union boats which participated in the 7 October 1862 capture near Hawkinsville, Florida of the Governor Milton, a Confederate steamer which had been ferrying Rebel troops and supplies along the St. John’s River. He later wrote that, as he boarded the Governor Milton, he ordered the steamer’s crew to surrender it “in the name of the U.S.” Following the steamer’s capture, he was ordered by his superiors to serve as the Boatman of the newly captured steamer, and served on detached duty in this capacity from that time until sometime in October when the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers returned from the Saint John’s Bluff expedition to Key West, Florida. Promoted from the rank of Corporal to Sergeant 21 October 1864. Promoted from the rank of Sergeant to 1st Sergeant 18 September 1865. Commissioned, but not mustered, as 2nd Lieutenant 5 August 1865.
